The Truth About Bugzu

by Merlin (a.k.a. Kevin)

(WebMistress note: This text was originally written when the list was hosted on BGSUs list processor. We have since moved on, but this is part of the history that helped shape the list. I have made a few editing changes such as links, tense, etc., but it remains basically the same.)

Parody is alway fun. I found the whole BUGSU or BUGZU thing funny. But just for the record and since the reputation of Bowling Green State University was at stake here, I thought that I'd mention a few things.

1. The job of managing a list of this volume is fun, but daunting.

2. Without Tiger Eye and Emy...there would have been no list, I would have bailed out a long time ago.

3. TE and I decided to set the BGSU listprocessor up to "automatically unsub" people when there were multiple problems with their address. Which meant that sometimes the subscriber's address is out of "order" or otherwise unreachable. After five days of trying to reach the address the unsub command was generated. Then there is the case where some subscriber's "server" returns mail. Their server may return mail and sometimes is has characters that caused "listproc" to postpone the subscribers mail. We didn't like this but it was better then being auto booted. So in the end if we didn't have the auto unsub then we would have had hundreds of error messages per day. In the beginning it was like that with many hundereds of errors a week, ask TE.

4. Many time the service provider won't know what the problem is either. Usually the problems occures along the path between here and there and not *right here* or *right there.* (each message sent or received doensn't always take the same path.
